Whoever built these castles in the area I am used the strategy of leveraging the nearby mountain to build a wall up. That same wall wiuld extend down into the vallley and around tge town. I am assuming that by building the castle wall up the mountain, the height of the mountain served as the castle tower, so to speak, as to see invading forces from afar. Maybe also it help mitigate against an invading force climbing the mountain and lobbing projectiles down into the town/castle.
